Art Catalogue: Julia Cybularz, Two Photo Essays

The front cover and spine showing "The Mathematician" and "Breaking the Girl"
"I am interested in the emotional and physical connections people have to their bodies and minds during challenging times. The images explore the concept of feeling like a foreigner within one's own body"
- Julia Cybularz during her TedX Talk.
The title page of the two projects.
A blue inside cover to keep the theme of the blue on the title page. It also is a common color throughout her photos.
Left: Publication/Acknowledgements page.
Right: Dedication page.
Contents spread.
I took the accent color of each photo and used it for the numbers that represent the pages of each section.
The x-ray is from Hannah's spine at 9 years old. Hannah is the artist's niece who suffered from scoliosis throughout puberty. She had to wear a brace for 20 hours a day so her body wouldn't expand.
"Her incredible courage going through that and her trust in me made me feel responsible." - Julia Cybularz during her interview with CNN
Julia's back who also has scoliosis.
Hannah recovering from surgery which fused her spine as straight as it could be.
"The Mathematician" introduction
Slawek Kosmala has schizophrenia and is developmentally delayed. He uses his own calculations as a coping mechanism for his illness. Slawek is Julia's cousin for Poland – they are great friends.
Right: A letter to Julia by Slawek.
On the right is dialogue from Cybularz's short film The Mathematician
"I saw love of life and the ability to be present. I discovered a voice yearning to be heard." - Julia Cybularz about the photo project with Slawek
